I found out about Dinette Triple Crown by chance while I was waiting for the 55 bus on Clark St. As curious as I am, I had a peek at the menu from their window. The first thing that caught my eyes was the pulled pork sandwich. At that moment, I did not hesitate to go in and order the sandwich immediately. Who does not like pulled pork? And how many restaurants do serve pulled pork on their menu?
It was also the time when DTC started implementing the idea of picnic in the park - a great idea and use of the surrounding area. The park in question is located a block across the restaurant.
DTC makes your life easier with their Meat & Three combo - choose either the beef brisket, the pulled pork or the fried chicken AND 3 out of the 7 Southern classic sides. The brisket and pulled pork are moist and tender covered with a ladle of smokey sauce. The fried chicken has a well-seasoned crispy skin and juicy meat. Despite which protein you order, you won't be disappointed. The sides are also as delicious. Here are some noteworthy ones. The hushpuppies are little corn fritters with a crunchy exterior and soft inside, similar to a falafel. This is served with a creamy white sauce. The sweet potatoes come in big chunks that are sweet and fork-tender. Finally, the buttermilk biscuit is soft and buttery, soak it in gravy, it will make your mouth salivate. If you are willing to pay a few extra bucks, opt for the Mac & Cheese - al dente cavatappi pasta, creamy and flavourful cheese sauce with a nicely crisp bread crumb crust.
If you have room for desserts, ask for their Desserts of the Day. The desserts do change regularly and depend on availability. We had both the chess pie and the derby pie - popularly served in Virginia and Kentucky respectively. Both pies are made with a light flaky crust that makes a crunch sound pleasant to the ears. The chess pie is like a custard pie but with the addition of cornmeal. The taste of corn is noticeable. This is served with a sweet tart rhubarb compote and bourbon whipped cream. The derby pie is primarily made of chocolate and walnuts, infused with bourbon - a sinfully delicious dessert that is worth ordering.
Now that it is summer, this is the best time to go to Dinette Triple Crown and enjoy a nice picnic with friends and family.
